would bronze from 1928 look like gold?

July 25th, 2010

i have a vintage 1928 dresser that we are refurbishing. it comes with a tall chest of drawers that has 2 doors that open with 5 hidden drawers. it had very detailed craftsmanship.

anyways....we were cleaning the pull ring knobs and they started to look gold. we scratched a small piece and its definatly not just gold plated.

i called an antique dealer and asked them if they thought it was gold and they said it was impossible!! why?
i know i can get a gold test, but i am just wondering if old bronze looks like gold.

thank you for your help!!

It is probably brass not bronze or gold. To find out if it’s gold, it must be put to the acid test. This will destroy the brass or bronze fittings by dissolving them. It will not hurt the gold. If the fittings were gold, they should have a karat mark on them. Otherwise the color alone will tell if it’s gold, look at a gold wedding band. True gold is seldom mistaken once you see it.

  2. Tortuga Tom

I seriously doubt a dresser would use anything but brass fittings. But it wouldn’t hurt to pull one to test it and make sure. Too bad it’s been ruined by "refurbishing"…it would have been worth much, much more in its original state.

  3. efflandt

If they were gold, they would always look like gold (gold does not tarnish). Polished brass does look like gold when it is clean.

I have a gold plated pocket watch from 1910 (based on serial number) that my grandfather must have had as a child. It still looks like gold without polishing it.

"anyways" ? "definatly" ? Gee whiz.
